Stories

The brain cancer community - patients, survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates are united by the goal of improving outcomes for children and adults diagnosed with brain cancer. Getting involved in the brain cancer community through advocacy, awareness initiatives, and fundraising is not only about supporting those currently fighting the disease, it paves the way for future generations. Collective action can lead to significant advancements in treatment and can bring us closer to a future without brain cancer.

Community Partners

The opportunity for companies to make a positive impact on the world has never been more important. Corporate giving programs not only recognize and celebrate employees by providing charitable dollars for donations, they also foster a culture of giving. All-in-one CSR software platforms seamlessly integrate employee engagement with grant management, making it easier for companies to contribute to meaningful causes like ours.

Advocacy

As patients and caregivers ourselves, we know each brain cancer experience is unique. Patient and caregiver voice is central to our effort to raise awareness and advocate for the gaps in care.

Douglas MacRae
Award of Courage

In his last year of life, Douglas joined Brain Cancer Canada as an Ambassador. Driven to raise awareness, Doug donated artwork to raise funds and was a guest speaker and hosted art events.

Douglas MacCrae was a Toronto-based artist, photographer, motorcycle racer and world traveller. His super realism paintings evolved into award-winning national advertising campaigns and mural commissions including at the Liberty Grand and international venues. He won awards from Marketing Magazine, CAPIC (Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators), Lux, and other associations.

The Douglas MacCrae Award of Courage was created in 2023 by Brain Cancer Canada, alongside Douglas’ wife and life partner, Marie Anne MacRae. The award is in honour of Douglas’ extraordinary life and to recognize and celebration his contributions to society.

The award is presented annually to a recipient that embodies qualities and characteristics possessed by Douglas:

  • Humility and kindness

  • Someone who improves human welfare and has a positive impact on community and others

  • Persistence, demonstrating grit in the face of adversity

  • Fierce hope and resilience

In 2019, Doug was diagnosed with GBM and was given a one-year survival prognosis. Determined to defy the odds, he remained courageous and positive. Sadly, after surviving 4.5 years, Doug passed away in August 2023.
