In the summer of 2020, a dear family friend, Jayne Lynde, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma. This terminal type of brain cancer is the same type of cancer that claimed the life of Gord Downie in 2017, the lead singer of the Tragically Hip.
Jayne has undergone brain surgery, radiation, and months of chemotherapy. She has been supported by her team of doctors at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and Equilibrium Healthcare Solutions in Bowmanville. They have helped Jayne and countless others fight this battle.
Despite this support, brain cancer remains dangerously underfunded. In 2017-2018 the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Institute of Health Research, invested $182 million into cancer research. Of this, only $5.4 million supported research related to cancers affecting the brain and central nervous system. That is a total of 3%. This lack of funding is one of the reasons why the last breakthrough in brain cancer research was only in 2005.
Brain Cancer Canada is one of the few charities whose primary focus is to raise money for brain cancer research, technology and treatment. They are a volunteer organization - NO MEMBER RECEIVES COMPENSATION AND THERE ARE NO SALARIED EMPLOYEES.
On Saturday October 16, 2021 we are running for Jayne. The goal is to raise $2000 through registration, sponsorships, and donations. Whether you wish to participate in a 5k or 10k run or even a 1k Kids Fun Run, all net proceeds will be going to support Brain Cancer Canada.
